White whole wheat, a cheesy conclusion

We decided that the answer to making sure that sprogs ate this evening was grilled cheese sandwiches. With the chili, of course, but we'd be willing to let them not eat the adult food if they at least ate the sandwiches.

LOML and I had grilled cheese sandwiches too --- we long ago discovered that they are wonderful in combination with chili, and the chili turned out to be spectacularly good too: LOML's raving about how good it was led to both children chowing down and pronouncing it yummy, delicious, scrumptious and scrumdiddliumptious too.

Of course, after seven or eight mouthfuls, Boo decided it was too spicy (it wasn't) and hurt her mouth (it didn't). And once she had said that, it was an effort to get Skibo not to think the same thing. Still he ate a couple of more spoonfuls....

In conclusion, the bread is not right yet, but it was a valiant first failure. I'll try again in a couple of days and update again.

Yours, in failure, grasping at success,
N.

Hmmmmmm. I wonder if maybe the flour would be better suited for basic bread. You know, the kind you don't like that takes three hours from mixing to oven. Another idea is that it needs a lot of yeast. Maybe some of this instant active I accidentally bought. That stuff is strong. Like yeast on steroids.

But the kids haven't complained, they like the monster loaves of bread.

I think that the sourdough-iness of the dough was a bit of the problem: but I think that it was more a matter of timing than anything else. I have to be out of the house by 7am, and that doesn't leave a lot of time to do bread work in the mornings!
And I do make basic bread all the time! I just prefer to make the more complicated slower types:-)

And to follow up, if I hadn't had a batch of old dough fermenting already, I probably would have made basic bread first, with the yeast I keep in the freezer... I've got lots of it, so I really don't object to using it:-)

As re. spiciness of chili. I got my kids off the whining by making a grownup batch and a kid batch. Then I let them taste the grownup one FIRST.

"Okay, try this one, then..."

Joke: we've tried that: their response so far is to try the spicy one, say yuck, and refuse to try the non-spicy one.

And this one was really quite good, and quite spicy, just not hot-spicy.
They actually did eat a reasonable quantity too.

Once they are hooked on chili, then I can start to introduce some serious heat:-)
